SCM20ASL

The SCM20ASL is a high-performance, 2-way loudspeaker active loudspeaker. All versions feature the same compliment of proprietary drive units, amplifier, and cabinet designed and manufactured in-house by ATC in England.

Frequencies below the 2.2kHz crossover are managed by the ATC SB75-150SL mid-bass driver. This exceptional driver features a highly damped 6-inch cone paired with an integrated 3-inch soft dome and utilises ATC’s proprietary Super Linear Magnet Technology to significantly reduce odd-harmonic distortion, especially in the lower midrange. Designed with a large 3-inch voice coil and a short coil/long gap configuration, the SB75-150SL is capable of high dynamic range and outstanding power handling. High frequencies are managed by ATC’s SH25-76S high-performance 1-inch (25mm) soft dome tweeter. This advanced tweeter features a unique dual-suspension design that effectively suppresses mechanical rocking modes, enabling a tight tolerance magnetic gap without the need for ferrofluid. Paired with a highly optimised motor, featuring a large 60mm diameter neodymium ring magnet, this driver delivers exceptionally low odd-harmonic distortion and an extended frequency response.

The active SCM20ASL features a built-in all analog class A/B two-way ‘amp pack’ with balanced inputs, active crossovers and a power amplifier dedicated to each drive unit.

All models are offered in a range of high-quality veneered or painted finishes.

Why Active?
In the quest for the best possible performance, all high-quality loudspeaker system manufacturers will have struggled with the limitations of passive crossover networks. Even though excellent results are possible from passive systems, a multi-way loudspeaker system will only realize its true potential if implemented as an active design. There are a few practical and economic reasons why passive speakers have remained so popular in the Hi-Fi market but, focusing on objective performance alone, active loudspeaker systems offer the following advantages:
• More accurate crossovers due to fixed filter ‘load’.
• Wider practical choice of crossover type/shape due to active line level operation.
• Greater dynamic range due to elimination of passive crossover losses.
• Ideally matched amps and more efficient use of amplifier power.
• Improved frequency response and stereo matching due to speaker-amp calibration.
• Better driver control: a more direct connection to the drivers with lower electrical resistance.
• Lower inter-modulation distortion due to reduced amplifier operating bandwidth.
